Whether we are promoting or holding a fund raising event, or providing hands on service; we are making a difference in our community.
Bethany Children's Home
Bethany Children’s Home has been providing residential services for children and youth since 1863. Bausman is active in donating books, gifts and time to the Eck Cottage at Bethany Children's Home.
Berks Women in Crisis
Berks Women in Crisis’ mission is to provide supportive services to victims and eliminate domestic and sexual violence in Berks County. Bausman collects cell phones and routinely provides them to the Women in Crisis center, makes financial donations, and provides cookies for their "Christmas in July" celebration.
Calvary Food Pantry
Calvary UCC church located at 640 Centre Avenue in Reading has a Food Pantry for the needy who live in Reading. Bausman collects food
monthly to support this mission along with the Youth Groups who collect food during the Souper Bowl of Caring event. Bausman also donates
hundreds of pounds of non-perishable foods during the annual Harvest Home collection.
Throughout the year there are five communion services during which a special offering is taken for Disaster Relief. Bausman uses the
proceeds of these offerings to help people throughout the world in times of disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
Family promise is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 365 day a year service providing temporary accommodations for homeless families. Bausman has been active in hosting families for one to three weeks a year. Up to three families are provided with three meals a day and overnight lodging in our church. Our volunteers prepare the meals and socialize with the guests, which has given our members a chance to connect personally with parents and their children in need.
Greater Berks Food Bank and CROP Hunger Walk
Bausman members and youth participate in the Reading CROP walk each year. CROP Hunger Walks help children and families worldwide
and right here in the U.S. – to have food for today, while building for a better tomorrow. Bausman also supports the Greater Berks Food
Bank's Weekend Back Pack program. This program provides backpacks with fresh food for needy children to take home on Fridays so they
will have food over the weekend.
Hope Rescue Mission
Hope Rescue Mission helps homeless men in getting their lives back together by providing with a safe environment to recover from their pasts and provide them with spiritual training, basic work skills, financial and life skills education, and esteem building through responsibility and accountability for the future. Bausman provides donations and time to this mission.
Knit Hat Ministry
In 2011, Bausman member Evelyn Freeman led the effort with fellow Bausman knitters by knitting 270 hats. The winter hats were blessed and distributed to Hope Rescue, Bethany Home, Women in Crisis, Salvation Army, Family Promise, Women's Bridge, and Opportunity House. They are very excited to continue and grow in the next coming years.
Opportunity House is a multi-service organization improving the quality of life for children, families and adults who face various obstacles to independent living. Bausman members volunteer, prepare and serve meals the last Sunday of each month. Our members also attend and support Opportunity House's "Souper Bowl" fundraiser.
Bausman members enjoy preparing, filling and delivering Easter baskets and plants to the residents at the Health Care Unit at Phoebe Berks.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our mission is to knit shawls and pray over them to bring joy, comfort, and include other
prayer concerns for the person receiving the shawl. Members of the
congregation can request a shawl for anyone at no cost. Donations are accepted
to help with the cost of yarn.
Contact Sue Wentzel for more details on this ministry.
Bausman members select Christmas tree tags each year for the Angel Tree program. Members buy and wrap gifts for 50-70 children and teens of families who cannot afford Christmas presents.
St Jude's Ranch for Children
Twice a year "old" greeting cards are collected and sent to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. St. Jude’s recycles your used greeting cards and
creates new holiday and all-occasion greeting cards. Recycled cards are sold to support their programs and services for abused, neglected and
homeless children, young adults and families. More than 30 years ago, wishing to show their donors appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch
for Children possible, the idea was conceived to turn the previous year’s Christmas cards into “new” cards for the coming season. The
recipients were so delighted when they received the unique “thank you,” that they requested to purchase the special cards. The program soon
expanded to include all-occasion greeting cards.
Bausman’s ministry to veterans has several components to it. We attend parades and services that honor veterans, help veterans and their
families with small household repairs, and educate the community concerning veteran’s issues. We also reach out monthly to homeless and
vulnerable veterans with food, clothing, prayers, and a listening ear. We hope to work with several local churches to help a veteran move from
homelessness to a better future in 2017.
A safe place for women to start over. Located on the top floor of the YMCA of Reading and Berks County, the Women's Bridge, SAFE and DUI House is a residential treatment program for women who have just come out of prison or are homeless or have two drunken-driving convictions. The purpose of Women's Bridge is to rehabilitate, assist with finding employment and return these women to society.
